The MWV Arts Association’s Main Street Art Gallery is highlighting the photography of Karen Lord of Madison on Friday, June 16th from 4-8 pm with an Open House. Lord has been an active member of the MWVAA and has served on the board for several years.
Lord has always had an interest in photography but became active in her pursuit of it since her retirement in 2012. She is fascinated with light and what it can create, constantly learning new techniques and trying her hand at different photography genre. A member of the North County Camera Club and the New England PSA (Photographic Society of America), she has won numerous awards in competitions, been written up in magazines and regional photography newsletters.
She classifies herself as a landscape/wildlife storytelling photographer, loves the technical side of the medium and pushes herself to expand her subjects. Lately, she has been achieving amazing results from combining images, using various Adobe Photoshop programs and filters. In “The Emerald City of Oz”, tulips were the original image and then Lord used lots of filters, twirling and blending to achieve the final stunning effect seen in Oz. Her “Frozen Bubbles” series were created with soap bubbles in temperatures of -11 degrees Fahrenheit. Every bubble crystalizes differently, just like snowflakes.
In her own words, “I can spend hours in the woods, mountains and deserts and take a thousand pictures. Only a couple will be printed but being outdoors is just perfect anytime of the year. Ansel Adams said, ‘Sometimes I do get to places just when God’s ready to have somebody click the shutter.’ Sometimes I get there too!”
